Gifted Education

Gifted learners, according to the U.S. Department of Education, 1993, are “children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.”

To qualify for gifted services, a student must score 97% or above on the CogAT. The CogAT is one of several state mandated tests to determine placement in a gifted program in Arizona.

Testing for gifted placement takes place twice a year in the fall and spring for grades 2-8.

Once a student qualifies, the gifted coordinator sees the gifted students at least once a week. The gifted program focuses on problem-based learning opportunities, creative and critical thinking tasks, deductive and lateral thinking tasks, social & emotional learning opportunities, and student choice projects. This program emphasizes extending the learning of our gifted population and ensure that they receive challenging opportunities to think in various ways.
